Doctors at Radboudumc in Nijmegen, Netherlands, have developed a surgical technique to successfully reconstruct clitorises damaged by vulvar cancer, restoring sexual function. A recent study involving 23 women who underwent the procedure revealed that 90% were able to experience clitoral orgasms within three to six months post-surgery. The new method involves carefully preserving and repositioning nerve bundles during tumor removal, then grafting tissue from the inner cheek – similar in texture to vulvar tissue – to create a new clitoral glans. Previously, such procedures resulted in the clitoris being covered by skin, eliminating the possibility of orgasm. Gynaecological oncologist Mieke ten Eikelder and plastic surgeon Tim Nijhuis developed the technique, which adds approximately 15 minutes to the original surgery, avoiding the need for a second procedure. This breakthrough mirrors similar reconstructive surgeries available for men with penile cancer for forty years, representing a significant advance in quality-of-life care for women in the Netherlands facing vulvar cancer.
