Identical twin filmmakers Stephen and Timothy Quay, known collectively as the Quay Brothers, received the Cristal d’honneur at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival for their extensive and influential body of work. The highly private animators are renowned for their distinctive, often unsettling, and fantastical worlds depicted in short films and diverse creative projects. Their career spans advertising, music videos, television, and experimental film, attracting a dedicated following and critical acclaim. Born in 1947, the American-born brothers studied at the Royal College of Art in London, where they continue to live and work. Heavily influenced by surrealist filmmaker Jan Švankmajer, as well as directors Buñuel, Tarkovski, and Bergman, the Quay Brothers have also collaborated with prominent artists including Christopher Nolan and Peter Gabriel. Their unique aesthetic has, in turn, inspired numerous artists across multiple disciplines.
