An influx of warm-water pufferfish is causing significant disruption to Greece’s fishing industry. First observed two decades ago, the invasive species has rapidly multiplied in Greek waters. These fish, not traditionally native to the region, are damaging fishing nets and reducing catches of commercially valuable species. Fishermen report substantial economic losses due to the pufferfish, which are often considered inedible and have limited market value. The increasing presence of these fish poses a growing threat to the sustainability of Greek fisheries and the livelihoods of those who depend on them. Authorities are currently assessing the scale of the problem and exploring potential mitigation strategies.
