Prominent economist Professor Abul Barkat has been released from jail after being granted bail in a case related to the death of businessman Abdul Wadud during the July movement in the Nilkhet area of Dhaka. Barkat was released from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on Thursday, June 18th. The Prison Directorate’s AIG (Media), Jannatul Farhad, confirmed the release to Bangla Tribune on Sunday, June 21st. He had been detained in connection with the incident stemming from the July protests. Further details regarding the case and the conditions of his bail have not been immediately released. The release follows a court decision to allow his bail application. Barkat is a well-known figure in Bangladesh’s economic sector.
