Users are increasingly reporting more errors and nonsensical suggestions from predictive text and autocorrect features on their smartphones. While a decline in the quality of these tools has been confirmed by researchers, the issue is complex. The growing sophistication of smartphone technology—and the more ambitious predictions it attempts—is also contributing to the visibility of these mistakes. Essentially, as phones try to do more, they are also generating more noticeable errors, sometimes referred to as “hallucinations” by users online. This doesn’t necessarily mean the technology is fundamentally broken, but rather that expectations are higher and the potential for error has increased alongside capability. The perceived increase in errors is a subject of ongoing discussion and analysis within the tech community.
