Police are investigating why a vehicle with occupants drove off of Hlávkova most in central Prague on Saturday. Experts consulted by Česká televize have stated that the guardrails on bridges in Prague are not engineered to withstand a direct, perpendicular impact from a vehicle. Current standards require a minimum 15-centimeter curb to help guide vehicles. According to Tomáš Padělek, associate dean of the Faculty of Transport at the Czech Technical University, the vehicle hit the bridge at the worst possible angle, preventing the curb from functioning as intended. This raises concerns about the adequacy of current safety measures on Prague’s bridges. The investigation continues to determine the exact cause of the incident and assess potential improvements to bridge infrastructure.
