Following recent elections where the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) secured the leading position, party chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has nominated Advocate Amjad Hussain as the next Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan. The PPP will form the government with the support of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). Hussain, the current PPP provincial president since 2016, also won a seat in the recent general elections. He previously served as a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly from 2020 to 2025 and the GB Council from 2009 to 2014, and was the opposition leader from 2020-2023. A lawyer specializing in regional legal issues, Hussain championed land reforms and advocated for provincial status for Gilgit-Baltistan. Bhutto-Zardari discussed government formation and the implementation of constitutional rights with Hussain following the appointment.
