Portugal’s Directorate-General for Health (Direção-Geral da Saúde) has released the country’s first national guidelines for food served in daycares and social support facilities catering to children under three years old. The new recommendations emphasize diversified meals with appropriate portion sizes and textures tailored to each age group. A key focus is the reduction of ultra-processed foods, sugar, and salt in children’s diets. These guidelines aim to promote healthier eating habits from a young age, supporting overall well-being and potentially facilitating breastfeeding. The DGS hopes these national orientations will standardize nutritional practices across childcare settings in Portugal. This initiative represents a significant step towards improving child nutrition and public health outcomes throughout Portugal.
