Over 30 municipalities across the districts of Bragança, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Viseu, Coimbra, and Portalegre in Portugal are currently at maximum risk of rural wildfires, according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). The alert encompasses a significant portion of the country’s interior north and central regions. This highest level of danger indicates conditions are exceptionally favorable for the ignition and rapid spread of fires. Authorities have not yet reported any active wildfires, but are on high alert and preparing for potential outbreaks. The IPMA assessment considers factors like temperature, humidity, wind speed, and fuel load. Residents in affected areas are urged to exercise extreme caution and adhere to preventative measures to minimize fire risk.
