Pope Leo has officially opened the Jesus Christ tower of Barcelona’s Sagrada Família basilica, blessing the 172-meter structure with holy water. The ceremony, attended by King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain, coincided with the 100th anniversary of architect Antoni Gaudí’s death. The Pope lauded the basilica as a masterpiece of “stone, colors and light,” while a choir of hundreds provided musical accompaniment. Tens of thousands gathered to witness the event, which concluded with a fireworks display. Construction of the Sagrada Família began in 1882 and, despite long-held expectations, is not expected to be completed for another decade. The basilica currently attracts approximately five million visitors annually. This event is part of Pope Leo’s multi-day visit to Spain, following a previous engagement in Madrid where he met with pop star Bad Bunny.
