The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party in Poland has nominated Adam Borowski as its candidate for the position of Human Rights Ombudsman, also known as the Rzecznik Praw Obywatelskich. The announcement was made by party leader Jarosław Kaczyński on Saturday. Borowski is a known dissident from the Polish People’s Republic era (PRL), the former communist regime. He currently chairs the Warsaw chapter of the “Gazeta Polska” club, a nationalistic organization. The nomination is likely to be controversial, given Borowski’s political background and affiliations. The Ombudsman position has been vacant for some time, and the selection process is expected to be closely watched by human rights organizations and political observers. Kaczyński stated the party would “go to great lengths” to secure Borowski’s appointment.
