Polish President Karol Nawrocki has announced a legislative initiative to establish June 28th as a national day of remembrance. The proposed “Day of Anti-Communist Opposition Activists and Persons Repressed for Political Reasons” would honor those who fought against and suffered under communist rule. The announcement was made during commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the Poznań June 1956 uprising, a pivotal event in Poland’s struggle for freedom. President Nawrocki has formally signed the initiative, initiating the legislative process. The new day aims to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of individuals involved in the anti-communist movement and those politically persecuted. The proposal now requires parliamentary approval to become law. This initiative underscores a continued focus on acknowledging and preserving the memory of Poland’s anti-communist past.
