Poland has revoked the Order of the White Eagle, the country’s highest honor, from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The decision stems from Zelensky’s recent decree on May 26th, which named a Ukrainian Special Operations Forces unit “Heroes of the UPA.” The UPA, or Ukrainian Insurgent Army, was a controversial nationalist organization during World War II, accused of atrocities against Poles during the war. Polish officials condemned the naming decision as insensitive and disrespectful to Polish history and victims. The move signals a deepening rift between the two nations, despite their shared support for Ukraine against Russian aggression. Poland’s President Andrzej Duda stated the honor could not remain with a leader who honors those responsible for wartime massacres of Poles. The Ukrainian government has not yet issued a formal response to the revocation.
