The controversial renovation of former municipal baths in Plzeň, intended to house the West Bohemian Gallery, remains stalled due to a lack of building permits. Originally estimated at 1.8 billion Czech crowns (approximately $81 million) in 2022, the project’s projected cost has now risen to an estimated 2.5 billion crowns ($108 million). The regional government, led by a coalition of ANO, STAN, and Pirate Party representatives, presented the initial cost estimate. The increase reflects evolving project scope and current economic conditions, according to a deputy governor for the economy. The delay in obtaining permits and the escalating costs are raising concerns about the project’s feasibility and timeline. No new completion date has been announced. The project aims to revitalize a significant cultural space within the city.
