Playmobil has ceased production in Germany after more than 50 years, closing its factory in Dietenhofen due to sustained financial losses. The company cites high labor and energy costs as key factors in the decision, alongside declining sales figures. Production will be relocated to the Czech Republic and Malta. The iconic toy, launched in 1974 with initial themes of knights, Native Americans, and construction workers, was founded on the principle of creating expandable play worlds for children. Despite its initial success and focus on imaginative play, Playmobil struggled to compete with digital entertainment and failed to attract a significant adult collector base, unlike its rival Lego. Employees will receive paid leave until the end of the month while future arrangements are discussed. The move marks the end of an era for the German toy manufacturer.
