The Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines affirmed on Friday that China’s land reclamation activities on Panganiban Reef (Mischief Reef) and Zamora Reef (Subi Reef) do not alter their legal status as low-tide elevations under international law. DFA spokesperson Rogelio Villanueva stated that these constructions cannot be used to claim sovereignty or maritime rights. The Philippines is demanding that China cease its occupation and all associated activities in these areas of the South China Sea. The DFA’s statement reiterates the Philippines’ position that China's actions violate its sovereign rights and international law. This response comes amid ongoing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, as Manila continues to assert its claims. The Department emphasized that the Philippines will continue to defend its maritime interests.
