A new study reveals alarming rates of pesticide poisoning among the world’s farmers, with almost half experiencing poisoning annually. Researchers estimate 402 to 433 million cases of unintentional acute pesticide poisoning occur each year, based on data from 2006-2023. Tragically, pesticide poisoning results in roughly 11,000 deaths annually, with India bearing the heaviest burden, accounting for nearly 60% of these fatalities. The study, commissioned by Pesticide Action Network, highlights the severe health risks faced by those working in agriculture. These findings underscore the urgent need for safer pest management practices and greater protection for farmworkers worldwide. The widespread exposure has significant implications for public health and sustainable agriculture.
