Peru’s Prime Minister Luis Galarreta and the Minister of Interior have celebrated the capture of the leader of the criminal organization known as “Los Pulpos” (“The Octopuses”). Galarreta stated from day one they were determined to apprehend the group’s members. The arrest signals a significant development in the government’s efforts to combat organized crime. Officials anticipate further arrests will follow this initial success. The executive branch also used the opportunity to reiterate its request for legislative powers from Congress, suggesting these are necessary to further strengthen the fight against crime. The government believes these powers will aid in future operations and preventative measures against similar organizations. This capture is seen as a positive step towards improving security within the country.
