Former minister Walter Ayala has filed a constitutional challenge against Peru’s electoral body, ONPE, regarding changes to the transmission of voting records. Ayala, also the lawyer for Roberto Sánchez – a presidential candidate – alleges a break in the chain of custody for ballots cast by Peruvians abroad. The legal action specifically seeks to invalidate votes from overseas Peruvians. Simultaneously, Ayala has requested a preliminary injunction to halt the counting of these foreign votes until a new president is officially proclaimed. He argues the altered transmission system compromises the integrity of the electoral process. The ONPE has not yet publicly responded to the allegations. This challenge introduces further uncertainty into the already contested Peruvian presidential election.
