The US Department of Defense has stopped using artificial intelligence tools developed by Anthropic after the company was placed on a blacklist. Previously, the Department utilized Anthropic's Claude for intelligence data analysis through a system known as Maven. The Pentagon has now been forced to transition to alternative AI models as a result of this decision. The reason for Anthropic’s inclusion on the blacklist remains undisclosed, but it prompted an immediate cessation of use for sensitive data applications. The Maven system relies on AI to process and interpret large datasets for intelligence purposes. This shift highlights the US military’s increasing reliance on, and vulnerability related to, commercial AI technologies. The Department has not specified which alternative AI models will be employed.
