Vietnam is considering expanding mandatory workplace accident and occupational disease insurance to include pensioners with qualifying employment contracts, as well as gig economy workers such as ride-hailing and delivery drivers. The proposal suggests coverage for retirees who have held employment contracts for one month or longer. This expansion aims to provide social safety nets for these increasingly vulnerable worker groups. Currently, these individuals are often excluded from standard workplace protections. The move reflects a growing recognition of the changing nature of work and the need to adapt social insurance policies accordingly. If implemented, the policy would broaden the scope of Vietnam’s existing mandatory insurance scheme. Further details regarding implementation and funding are yet to be announced.
