Malaysia’s Parliament will have a greater role in the appointment of the Attorney General, according to the Minister in charge of law. The new process will stipulate that candidates must be selected from a list provided by the Legal Affairs Division (SPKP), excluding direct involvement from the Prime Minister or the Cabinet. This change aims to enhance the independence of the Attorney General’s office and reduce executive influence in the selection process. The Minister stated this shift is intended to strengthen the separation of powers. Previously, the Prime Minister held significant sway in nominating candidates for the position. This reform represents a key step towards greater transparency and accountability in the appointment of the country’s chief legal officer. The move is expected to be debated further within Parliament.
