Panama is set to receive the original documents from the 1826 Amphictyonic Congress of Panama, a pivotal event in Latin American history. The handover is coming from Brazil, which has held the documents since the congress concluded. Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha described the return as a potentially “one of the most important gestures” of recent diplomatic meetings. The Amphictyonic Congress aimed to foster unity and cooperation among the newly independent nations of Latin America, inspired by the ancient Greek model. These original records offer valuable insight into the early discussions and aspirations of the region’s founders. The transfer signifies strengthened bilateral relations between Panama and Brazil and a renewed focus on shared historical heritage. The documents are expected to be publicly displayed following their arrival.
