Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has appealed to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for urgent intervention to secure the release of ten Pakistani sailors held captive by Somali pirates. The sailors were taken hostage in April 2026 when their oil tanker, MT Honour 25, was hijacked off the coast of Somalia. Despite ransom demands of around $3 million, negotiations have stalled, raising concerns about the deteriorating health of the crew who report dwindling supplies of food, water and medicine. The situation is complicated by uncertainty regarding the ship's true ownership, with initial reports of the owner proving inaccurate. Besides the Pakistani nationals, the crew includes seafarers from Indonesia, India, and Sri Lanka. Dar reiterated Pakistan's commitment to the IMO and discussed strengthening collaborative maritime efforts during a meeting with IMO Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez in London. The Pakistani government is pressing for a swift resolution to the hostage crisis and the safe return of its citizens.
