Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi was laid to rest in his hometown of Aliabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, following a funeral attended by many, including government officials. Sakhi was part of a ten-person expedition that went missing after an avalanche on Broad Peak in late July. His body was recovered on August 13th, and airlifted via Pakistan Army helicopters to his final resting place. This tragedy follows the recovery of expedition leader Nirmal Purja, with searches continuing for two remaining climbers. The Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Minister lauded Sakhi as a brave mountaineer whose death is a loss for the region and Pakistan. The government will provide financial assistance to Sakhi’s family through an insurance policy for local climbers. Sakhi, 30, was a respected figure known for leading rope-fixing teams and assisting in mountain rescues.
