An anti-terrorism court in Lahore acquitted former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in connection with the May 9, 2023 riots, sparked by the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. However, the court sentenced four senior leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party – Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed, and Ejaz Chaudhry – to ten years in prison. The charges relate to allegations of inciting violence, attacking police vehicles, and burning property during the widespread protests. The court also acquitted Qureshi and eleven other party workers, while sentencing additional workers to ten-year terms. Prosecutors presented 37 witnesses alleging the PTI leaders planned and instigated the riots that targeted military installations and state buildings. This verdict follows previous rulings in other May 9 cases, with Rashid, Cheema, Rasheed, and Chaudhry receiving multiple sentences. The riots resulted in the arrest of thousands of PTI members and leaders.
