Information Minister Ataullah Tarar has called for the resolution of disputes regarding refugee seats in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly through democratic and constitutional means. The controversy centers on 12 seats reserved for refugees from Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir residing in mainland Pakistan. The Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has demanded the abolition of these seats, leading to widespread protests. Simultaneously, the PPP’s AJK chapter has urged the election commission to withdraw the current election schedule for these positions. Minister Tarar emphasized that while peaceful protest is a right, lawlessness cannot be tolerated. He stressed that the federation remains committed to the development and public welfare of the region. The government has allocated significant budget resources for AJK infrastructure, including electricity. Ultimately, Tarar advocated for dialogue and elections as the primary methods to secure a public mandate.
