Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi chaired a meeting of the Paigham-i-Aman Committee to finalize security arrangements for Muharram, the Shia mourning month, beginning June 17th. The committee focused on preventing sectarian violence and incitement, particularly online, vowing action against those spreading hateful content. Minister Naqvi emphasized the importance of collaboration with religious leaders (ulema) and reactivating the Paigham-i-Pakistan Committee at the district level to promote religious tolerance. He stressed that extremism and rebellion against the state have no place in Islam and called for public awareness campaigns based on Islamic teachings. The meeting also highlighted Pakistan’s role, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and facilitated by Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, in recent US-Iran negotiations resulting in a new agreement. Maintaining law and order during Muharram was described as a shared national responsibility, with a dedicated coordinator to be appointed for the peace committee.
