Pakistan’s government has modestly decreased petrol prices by Rs0.12 per litre and diesel by Rs0.66 per litre for a three-day period, bringing retail prices to Rs336.03 and Rs392.38 respectively. Despite these reductions, substantial taxes remain, with Rs110 levied on petrol and Rs96 on diesel per litre. Simultaneously, the country faces a significant energy price shock, as the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) announced a record 32% increase in the price of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG). The RLNG price has surged to $25.83 per mmBtu for SNGPL and $25.09 per mmBtu for SSGCL, largely due to difficulties securing shipments from Qatar amid geopolitical tensions. This represents a 148% jump since February and will substantially increase fuel costs for power generation. The RLNG price hike poses a significant challenge to the nation’s energy sector and economy.
