The government of Pakistan reduced petrol prices by Re0.14 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs1.89 per litre, effective October 1. These adjustments bring the retail prices to Rs387.40 per litre for petrol and Rs400.35 per litre for HSD. Despite the reduction, substantial taxes and duties remain, with Rs114 per litre levied on petrol and Rs100 on diesel. HSD prices previously peaked at Rs520.35 on April 3, rising from Rs281 after the start of the US-Iran conflict on February 28, while petrol reached a high of Rs458.41 on the same date, up from Rs266 in early March. In response to rising fuel costs linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict, the government has implemented austerity measures including earlier market closures and reduced fuel allocations for official vehicles. Furthermore, a relief scheme was launched on September 13 to assist owners of smaller vehicles, with its success praised by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar on September 29.
