Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the acceleration of a 100-megawatt solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) to ensure a swift completion. The directive came during a review meeting in Islamabad where the project’s progress was assessed. Sharif also mandated independent third-party validation to guarantee transparency throughout the project’s development. The federal government will fully fund the initiative, aiming to provide uninterrupted, affordable, and sustainable power to the region. Alongside the 100MW project, an 18MW solarisation project for government buildings is underway, with completion expected by December in Gilgit and Diamer divisions and by October in Baltistan division. An additional 82MW project to power homes in several GB cities is also in progress. The 100MW project received approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council in August 2025 and formal approval from the Prime Minister in December.
