The Pakistan Navy has received the first of eight Hangor-class submarines at Karachi Port, a key development in its ongoing modernization efforts. This delivery signifies strengthened defense ties between Pakistan and China. The new submarine boasts advanced features including Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, modern sensors, and enhanced stealth capabilities, substantially increasing the navy’s combat effectiveness. A traditional naval welcome, including a ceremonial salute and helicopter fly-past, marked the vessel’s arrival. The “Hangor” name commemorates a historic 1971 naval victory where a Pakistani submarine sank an Indian frigate. Further submarines in the class are slated for induction, with launches scheduled through 2025. This acquisition represents a significant investment in Pakistan’s maritime defense.
