Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) is actively monitoring 130 glacial lakes identified as potentially dangerous due to the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). Utilizing satellite imagery from May 31st and June 1st, 2026, Suparco assesses the risk to downstream populations. Currently, 24 of the identified lakes are unfrozen and under close observation, with their size being measured to evaluate potential hazards. Mapping efforts highlight both frozen and unfrozen lakes and pinpoint vulnerable communities using a grid-based population exposure assessment. Suparco emphasizes that climate change is accelerating glacial melt, increasing GLOF risks, and notes that the upcoming El Niño weather pattern may bring atypical weather conditions. The organization shares its findings with national and provincial disaster management authorities to facilitate preparedness and mitigation efforts. Data from provincial authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan contributed to the identification of these high-risk lakes.
