Pakistan’s Election Commission (ECP) has summoned officials from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Islamabad to appear before it on July 1st regarding significant delays in submitting necessary data for local government (LG) elections. LG terms in KP ended in March, and Islamabad has been without elected representatives since February 2021, leaving approximately 2.5 million residents without local governance. The ECP expressed concern over the lack of maps and data from KP, despite repeated requests, and invoked constitutional provisions requiring executive assistance. Notices have been issued to the chief secretaries and relevant local government officials of both regions, mandating their appearance and the provision of the required information. In Islamabad, the ECP is awaiting federal cabinet approval and subsequent data regarding town corporations and union councils. The commission is actively preparing for LG polls in KP, Punjab, and the federal capital, but progress is hampered by these ongoing data deficiencies.
