Traditional insect research in Pakistan, reliant on physical characteristics and microscopic examination, is being transformed by advancements in DNA technology. Scientists are now utilizing DNA barcoding, genomic databases, and artificial intelligence to identify and categorize insect species with increased accuracy. This shift addresses limitations of physical identification, especially with similar or damaged specimens. A national survey in Pakistan, analyzing samples from 1,858 sites between 2010 and 2019, generated over 50,000 DNA barcode records representing 6,590 unique groupings. These records are cataloged using Barcode Index Numbers (BINs) within the global Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD) database, allowing for efficient comparison and clustering of insect DNA. The new methods are revealing unprecedented insights into insect biodiversity across Pakistan’s diverse ecosystems, from its arid plains to its forests.
