The Islamabad High Court has reserved its decision regarding the legality of a challenge to President Asif Ali Zardari’s delay in approving judicial appointments. A writ petition filed by advocate Luqman Zafar Chaudhary argues the president has not acted on a summary forwarded by the prime minister for the appointment of 19 additional judges and the confirmation of five existing judges. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan recommended these appointments on July 20th and 21st. Despite this, the president has not approved the summary after 15 days, prompting legal action. Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir is presiding over the case. The petitioner seeks a court order directing the president to approve the appointments immediately. The court’s ruling on the maintainability of the plea is now awaited.
