Pakistan’s Federal Constitutional Court is reviewing a Supreme Court decision ordering the demolition of restaurants located within the Margalla Hills National Park. The original Supreme Court ruling, issued in August 2024 and enforced the following month, mandated the closure of Monal, La Montana, and Gloria Jeans restaurants to protect the park’s biodiversity. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) filed a review petition challenging the order, requesting the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board not to take possession of the restaurants. The Supreme Court had previously dismissed similar petitions from the restaurant owners, deeming Monal Group’s land claim illegitimate and the restaurants’ operation a violation of wildlife protection laws. During the recent hearing, the federal government expressed support for the CDA’s appeal. The court’s review centers on the planned demolition of the restaurant infrastructure while minimizing environmental impact.
