Pakistan has finalized a significant military restructuring initiated by the 27th Constitutional Amendment with the appointment of Gen Syed Aamer Raza as the commander of the National Strategic Command (CNSC). This new four-star post oversees the operational integration of Pakistan's strategic forces, a role previously held by the abolished Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif promoted Gen Raza and simultaneously assigned him to the CNSC position. The 27th Amendment also created the Chief of Defence Forces position, currently held by Field Marshal Munir. The CNSC, appointed by the prime minister based on the CDF’s recommendation, will serve a three-year term and unify strategic force operations across the army, navy, and air force. While the CNSC manages operational command, the National Command Authority, led by the prime minister, retains ultimate authority over nuclear policy. Gen Raza previously served as the chief of general staff and oversaw changes following last year’s conflict with India, including establishing the Army Rocket Force Command.
