Pakistan is leading international advocacy for increased global action against viral hepatitis, highlighted during a UN briefing. The event, co-hosted with the UN Group of Friends to Eliminate Hepatitis, addressed the disease’s significant global impact, causing 1.3 million deaths annually. Pakistan showcased its national program, the Prime Minister’s Programme for the Elimination of Hepatitis C, a $250 million initiative with the WHO to eliminate Hepatitis C as a public health threat by 2030. This program offers free screening, diagnosis, and treatment nationwide, overseen by a National Task Force led by the Prime Minister. Pakistan is also pushing for a dedicated UN High-Level Meeting on Viral Hepatitis by 2028 to further prioritize the issue. The briefing brought together health officials, diplomats, and experts to discuss strategies for elimination and increased political commitment.
