Pakistan has formally appealed to the UN Security Council, alleging India is violating the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) through the construction of infrastructure projects diverting water from the Chenab River. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s letter, delivered by Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, warns these actions threaten Pakistan’s water, food, and economic security, as well as regional stability. Pakistan argues India intends to alter the treaty-governed water flow, potentially “weaponizing water.” This is not the first such appeal; a similar letter was sent in April regarding India’s earlier attempts to suspend the treaty. Dar has publicly stated that 17 Indian projects on the Indus River System could grant India “hydro-hegemony.” The IWT has long been a point of contention between the two nations, and Pakistan is urging the UNSC to hold India accountable for these alleged violations and address the escalating situation.
