During the 17th session of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (COP17) in Mongolia, Oyu Tolgoi company announced enhanced initiatives focused on increasing renewable energy use, protecting water resources, reducing land degradation, and sharing best practices in land restoration. Specifically, the Oyu Tolgoi mine aims to contribute to Mongolia's energy transition by sourcing a portion of its electricity needs from domestic renewable energy sources, potentially accelerating the shift to a low-carbon, green economy. The company will also fully implement its “100 Million Trees” program, expanding it into a comprehensive land rehabilitation plan to enhance biodiversity and carbon sequestration. This includes plans for 5,000 hectares of afforestation in the Gobi Desert to combat desertification and exploring three forest restoration projects covering approximately 10,000 hectares each in northern and central Mongolia. These efforts aim to support the sustainable development of Mongolia’s energy sector and create positive environmental, social, and economic impacts.
