A court in Ostrava has begun hearing a case alleging discrimination related to the eviction of a community center serving a settlement known as Bedřiška. The settlement houses both Roma families and members of the majority population, having evolved from a former ghetto. The lawsuit, filed against the city, concerns the August 2023 eviction notice issued to the N.O.B.L. association by the Mariánské Hory a Hulváky district authorities. The central question before the court is whether the eviction was lawful or constituted discrimination against the residents of Bedřiška. The N.O.B.L. association provided services from the community center. The court’s decision will determine if the city’s actions were justified or discriminatory in nature, potentially setting a precedent for similar cases.
