The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Jan Bratu, has called on Serbian authorities to resolve the 2001 murder of journalist Milan Pantić, marking the 25th anniversary of the crime. Bratu emphasized the importance of accountability for those responsible and highlighted the chilling effect unsolved journalist killings have on media freedom. Pantić, a correspondent for the independent radio station Radio Index, was fatally shot in front of his apartment building in Jagodina. Despite previous investigations, no one has been definitively convicted for the murder. The OSCE official stressed that impunity for crimes against journalists undermines democratic principles and the rule of law. Bratu reiterated the OSCE’s commitment to supporting media freedom and advocating for the protection of journalists in Serbia and throughout the region. The case remains a significant concern for press freedom organizations.
