Natália Svítková, age 40, has announced her candidacy for Trenčín Region governor, challenging incumbent Jaroslav Baška, who has held the position for 13 years and remains a prominent figure within the Smer party. Svítková’s campaign has garnered broad support from the opposition, including the Democrats, Progressive Slovakia, SaS, KDH, Hnutie Slovensko, and OKS. She currently serves as a municipal council member, bringing local political experience to the regional race. Svítková has publicly expressed concerns about potential surveillance by intelligence services, alleging monitoring of herself and her husband. Baška’s long tenure makes him the last high-ranking Smer official still leading a regional government. The upcoming election represents a significant test for the opposition’s ability to unseat established political figures.
