Following a scandal at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in Ghana, Africa Education Watch’s Executive Director, Kofi Asare, is demanding urgent reforms within the Ghana Education Service (GES). Asare advocates for the implementation of standardized safeguarding procedures nationwide to better protect students. He specifically calls for the creation of a national sex offenders’ register to prevent individuals with histories of misconduct from gaining positions of trust in schools. Additionally, he stresses the necessity of mandatory criminal background checks for all teachers prior to employment. These measures, Asare argues, are crucial to addressing systemic failures in addressing allegations of misconduct. The calls come as concerns grow regarding student safety and the handling of sensitive cases within the Ghanaian educational system. He believes these changes are necessary to create a safer learning environment for students in Ghana.
