New York City successfully implemented an innovative stormwater management system on Staten Island, opting for wetland preservation over traditional sewer infrastructure in the 1990s. Known as the “Bluebelt” initiative, the project revitalizes natural waterways to efficiently manage runoff, providing a cost-effective alternative to expensive underground drainage. This approach integrates both natural “green” infrastructure with some “grey” infrastructure for a hybrid solution.
