Norway’s media regulator, Medietilsynet, has found that the national public broadcaster, NRK, did not meet its required quota of 25% Nynorsk (New Norwegian) language usage across its radio and online platforms in 2023. While NRK nearly reached the target online with 23.4% Nynorsk content, radio broadcasts fell slightly short at 23.3%, a decline from the previous year when the quota was met. Television programming, however, did satisfy the requirement, achieving 28% Nynorsk. Medietilsynet emphasizes the importance of NRK fulfilling its language mandate and has consistently urged the broadcaster to increase Nynorsk usage across all platforms. The regulator’s annual review confirms NRK met all other stipulations outlined in its broadcasting license. This is not the first time NRK has faced scrutiny regarding its Nynorsk language output. Medietilsynet director Mari Velsand stated the language commitment is vital for NRK.
