Norway’s Equality and Anti-Discrimination Ombud has called for the establishment of a state compensation scheme for transgender individuals who were subjected to unwanted sterilization. Until 2016, Norwegian health authorities required sterilization as a condition for legal gender recognition, a practice now deemed a violation of human rights. The Ombud argues that a compensation scheme is necessary, mirroring those already in place for other groups harmed by state actions. This recommendation seeks to acknowledge the harm caused by the previous policy and aid those affected in moving forward. The practice was ruled a breach of human rights after 2016, but no compensation has been offered to date. The Ombud believes a formal scheme would provide crucial recognition and support to the impacted individuals.
