From April 1st, 2027, all fishing boats in Norway will be required to install secure, encrypted transmitters to share their location with authorities. This new regulation, announced by the Ministry of Trade and Fisheries, extends to vessels under 8 meters, previously exempt from such requirements. The Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) automatically transmits a ship’s position, course, and speed to the Directorate of Fisheries, and only approved equipment can be used – disabling it is prohibited at all times. Existing VMS-equipped ships will face stricter accuracy standards, with potential fines for non-compliance. The government states this system ensures fishing adheres to regulations, respects closed areas, and verifies quota compliance. Unlike the open-access Automatic Identification System (AIS) designed to prevent collisions, VMS data is reported directly to authorities, bolstering fisheries management and maritime safety, according to Fisheries and Ocean Minister Marianne Sivertsen Næss. Financial assistance will be available to fishers for equipment purchase and installation.
