Norwegian authorities have seized a Russian vessel following a request from Ukraine’s state-owned oil and gas company, Naftogaz. The seizure aims to enforce a ruling requiring Russia to compensate Naftogaz for assets expropriated during the 2014 annexation of Crimea. In April 2023, a Dutch court ordered Russia to pay Naftogaz $4.22 billion, plus interest and legal costs, as compensation. Naftogaz initiated legal action against Russia in 2016 to recover losses from the property confiscation. The seizure occurred in Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic. This action represents a step towards enforcing the international court’s decision and securing financial redress for Ukraine’s state energy firm.
